Salt: The Seven Notes of the Ocean
In 1976, in the waters of Stellwagen Bank Sanctuary off Cape Cod, a humpback whale captured the hearts of scientists and nature lovers alike: Salt. She was named for the white, salt-crystal-like markings on the edge of her fluke, and she became a pioneer in revealing the individuality of humpback whales. Every graceful movement of her tail was like a melody echoing through the waves—not through loud calls or grand displays, but through the quiet originality of her presence.
Salt led with the calm rise and fall of her fluke. Gliding through the depths of the ocean, she guided her pod, inspired researchers, and reminded all who watched her of nature’s silent power. Her tail was like the brushstroke of an artist; each movement painted the endless story of the sea.
When Salt passed away of natural causes in 2009, she left behind more than just her physical presence—she left a legacy. Her tail carried the rhythm of the ocean’s song, built upon the seven fundamental notes scientists discovered in humpback whale songs. Each dive was a note in nature’s eternal symphony, resonating with all who listened. In her memory, we produce a limited number of pieces, each representing one of those notes in the humpback’s song.
The form of our work reflects a delicate balance: strong enough to embody the power of the ocean, yet shaped with flowing curves that mirror Salt’s grace. Just as the sea holds both silence and song, this piece carries strength in its structure and music in its lines.
This is not merely a whale’s tail. It is a tribute that speaks not only to the eyes but also to the hearts that still feel her melody.
